Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System for the First Time.
The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Players will gain the option to challenge certain rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in use at both the US Open and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This move arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
